Communications and Engagement Officer

Salary and Grade: Spinal Column Points LC2 Scale 18-23 (£27,344 – £30,151) Pro-Rata
Hours of work: 30 per week, including occasional evenings and weekends for which time off in lieu will be given.

Responsible to: Town Council, via the Town Clerk

Reporting to the Town Clerk this post will lead on delivering the Council's Communications & Engagement Strategy and Action Plan. Working across all areas the post will support the Council's strategic priorities, e.g. the environment, regeneration, resilience, wellbeing, community development, community safety, the arts and culture.

Key responsibilities

Have strategic oversight of external communications across the council

  • Implement a resource-appropriate council-wide communications and engagement plan.
  • Monitor and report on performance relating to communications and engagement.
  • In consultation with the Town Clerk/Comms Team, develop and deliver an effective press and media service and ensure all copy is submitted for printing in local publications.
  • Work with the Town Clerk/Comms Team to prepare press releases and deal with media enquiries, in line with the Town Council Media Policy, to protect and enhance the council's reputation.
  • Research and prepare copy as appropriate for council publications such as newsletters, posters, town guides and other materials and to make sure they meet Plain English and Town Council standards.
  • Design marketing materials including social media content, printed posters and signage in line with Council's corporate guidelines.
  • Work with the Town Clerk/Comms Team and other officers to improve and maintain the Town Council website to a high standard.
  • Produce regular newsletters , including content produced by the Comms Team and Councillors.
  • Liaise with the Town Clerk/Comms Team on editorial and layout matters.
  • Maintain and update the Town App and its database.
