Stay At Home VE Day Celebrations

Many residents of the town took to their gardens and doorsteps on Friday, to commemorate and celebrate the end of war in Europe and mark 75 years since VE Day amid the current lockdown.

Rushden homes, shops and historic buildings were beautifully decorated in red, white and blue bunting, residents enjoyed cakes and scones and sang along to Vera Lynn's - We'll Meet Again. Rushden Town Council decorated the Cenotaph with bunting, the infamous Rushden bikes were adorned with British flags, and Lightning Lloyd created a very touching light display projecting onto the Cenotaph, St Mary's Church and Rushden Station.

Cllr Melanie Coleman made these comments about her own street's VE day experience: "Balham Close certainly did their best to Celebrate VE Day, decorating houses, baking cakes and scones . The younger members doing chalk drawings. All whilst maintaining social distancing. We've even planned a street 'bake off' when restrictions are lifted."

"A day to remember with new friendships made."
