Merchant Navy Day

Merchant Navy Day

Merchant Navy Day is observed annually on 3 September. The day honours the vital role and sacrifice of British merchant seafarers, who were granted the title "Merchant Navy" by King George V in recognition of their service during the First World War.

Often described as the forgotten and invisible navy community, their contribution is remembered each year as the Red Ensign is flown across the country in tribute to the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy.

Cllr Mercer was proud to attend and speak at the flag-raising ceremony in Rushden, joining with others to pay respect to this important part of our national heritage.
